Overall, the book was very informative and even a bit witty at times. But there was a overwhelming sense of elitism throughout the text. He tends to use his years among the literati as a way to measure himself against his colleagues, and there are constant mentions of terrific spending binges, where he acquire the entirety of another person collection. Most of the time, it didn’t bother me (it’s his money), but every once in a while it got to be a bit much. I wouldn’t stop you from reading it, but I wouldn’t recommend it fanatically either.

Details the author's search for research material on modern French literature and the arts. From Kirkus reviews: "A rich collection of book-lore, gossip, financial skullduggery, and scholarly high jinks. For book collectors of any size, this is a sophisticated treat."

This book is dedicated to the "like-minded reader," and its descriptions do make a sympathetic heart beat a little faster. Lake is a rabid bibliophile (and curator at the Ransom Humanities Research Ctr., Univ. of Texas, Austin) who revels in the tracking of books and other documents, specifically those concerning 19th- and 20th-century literary, art, and music history. He focuses on the show more acquisition of primary sources, giving equal weight to the substantive qualities of the material by pointing out the scholarly value found in the text, as well as the aesthetic qualities, e.g., describing a fine binding with relish. He makes extensive reference to the world of bookselling, using a specialized vocabulary while avoiding jargon. Highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries. show less
