A local parish production of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta seems a welcome comic relief for antiques dealer and amateur sleuth Doran Fairweather and her ex-vicar husband Rodney Chelmarsh, as they try to recover from the death of Rodney's daughter and revive their stale marriage. But the light comedy soon turns into heavy drama as the hot summer reaches its peak and the cast succumbs to clashing personalities, clandestine affairs, and more-than-amateur ambition. Hardly have the rehearsals started when the Chelmarshes' new neighbor Paula French--the prima donna in the leading role whom no one seems to like--disappears. The plot thickens when a sinister prop chest is used as a coffin, and Doran once again finds herself challenged to find a killer. She soon discovers that she cannot trust anyone, perhaps not ever her own houseguest, and as the story unfolds, it promises to be a very sticky July indeed...… (more)
