19. I liked the book “Pitching in for Eubie” by Jerdine Nolan for a number of reasons. The characters are very believable, as the story focuses on a child’s efforts to help raise money for her sister to attend college. The writing flowed well as it took the reader through the various ways in which Lilly tried raising money for her sister, in addition to the ways in which Eubie’s parents felt burdened by the fact that they could not support their daughter’s education. The illustrations enhance the story, as they do an excellent job of portraying the family’s emotions through the detail in the family’s facial expressions and body language. The main message of this book shows the determination of a family to support one show more another in times of financial difficulty. show less
Eubie has been accepted to college, but the family has to find a way to raise $3,000 by the end of the summer. Everyone gets jobs and helps pitch in except Lilly, the narrator. She tries all kinds of small jobs but none work out until finally a job lands right in her lap and she finally feels like she's pitching in for Eubie. A good story to use about families and maybe some students can even relate to how Lilly is feeling about not being able to pitch in.
Great moral to this story. A young girl is trying to find ways to help her family come up with tuition money for her older sister. Great read to kids to let them know that no matter how young/little they are, there are always ways to help out!
This is book which will leave the reader in a happy mood. Although I do not think this story is for most young children. I think only children who have older sibilings might be able to relate to it. This story is about a young girl who tries to make money to help her older sister go to college. Throughout the story you see her rough times she has trying to make money but at the end she figures how to help out!
Summary:
This story is a family whose daughter, Eubie, got accepted to attend the freshman class in college with a four-year scholarship. However, the college needs $3,000 for room and board. The whole family pitches in doing side-jobs to earn money.
Personal Reaction:
I liked this book because it was simple enough to elaborate on and be able to ask open-ended questions and to get creative with. It is a great story to teach children the importance of pulling together, doing your part, and pitching in.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. I could have the class think of something that they could put on the classroom wish list (such as a computer or classroom pet). Then, the children could come up with ideas on how the class is going to earn the show more money for that item.
2. I would do an activity that emphasizes the importance of doing your part. The activity that I would choose would be one that would not work unless everyone pitched in. We would first do the activity as a whole and then without one person to show how big of a difference it makes to be missing the one link. We would then talk about how this is important in everyday life. show less
