African-American third graders Nikki and Deja are next-door neighbors on Fulton Street, and best friends. When a new girl moves in across the street, they're excited - but "stupid Antonia" rolls her eyes at them and acts stuck-up. Naturally she's in their class at school too, where she tries to drive them apart by starting a club to rival Deja's drill team club (which Nikki leaves, because she's no good at drilling). A story of best-friendship broken and healed, with the promise of more in the series.
Well, unlike at least one other reviewer, I saw Nikki as of East Indian descent, and Deja as of African. After all, Nikki doesn't know about kinky hair... And they're not even necessarily American, so saying "African-American" is rather silly. They're just two little girls, best friends in a friendly working-class neighborhood. Which is a good thing.

However, Deja is a Mean Girl, and Nikki is working hard to become one.
Yes. Note that even after they supposedly learn their lesson, Antonia is still out in the cold, and Deja still likes to be the last to have a bit of cookie to eat....
This book was a really simple, straight-foward book for children to read. It had a good message that children can learn from. I also noticed that its a series, so if a child is like how i was when i was young, then they'll enjoy the fact that the story continues.
This book is a good book because i like to relate to friend books. This is an ar book.
