Of course it's a little bit like [b:Bambi|739840|Bambi|Felix Salten|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344401718s/739840.jpg|881085], by the same author. And adult Bambi even makes a cameo here. And it's a bit like [b:Black Beauty|3685|Black Beauty|Anna Sewell|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328869313s/3685.jpg|4639714], in that the author gives the animals personalities, and dreams & fears, to help us be sympathetic to them, but does not anthropomorphize them to the point that Disney does.

I found that it was so brilliantly written that I felt my own life becoming affected - a day after finishing I still feel timid, cold, hungry, oppressed, with the perception that we live for only brief glimmers of joy. show more Definitely not for little children. show less
