The author tells a heartwarming fictional story about a young girl traveling on the Oregon Trail with her guardian angel doll. However, there are non-fictional elements of the story because it adds true elements and parts of the Oregon trail. So, she informs students (readers) about life on the Oregon Trail, but captures their attention with the engaging story of Melissa's journey. At the end of the book there is a section with activities and information about the pilgrims-> as well as a game and a map. This adds another non-fiction element to the book because it gives real information on pilgrims and their lives on the Oregon Trail.
