anonymous user The 1993 Free Press edition describes "a new administration" coinciding with "extraordinary opportunities". Who was taking over federal administration in the USA that year? Bill Clinton, who later wrote a book about charitable donations that can be read as a followup to some of Gardner's statements for "leaders from various segments of our national life".

First words

[Introduction] Why do we not have better leadership? The question is asked over and over. We complain, express our disappointment, often our outrage; but no answer emerges.
Leadership is a word that has risen above normal workaday usage as a conveyor of meaning.

(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)[Introduction] We can do better. Much, much better.
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)If our leaders at all levels are to be capable of lifting us and moving us, they re going to have to believe in the people of this nation--a people so able to perform splendidly and so inclined to perform indifferently, so troubled in their efforts to find a future worthy of their past, so capable of greatness and so desperately in need of encouragement to achieve that greatness.
