Description

Richard Winslow is in a rut. His marriage is over and he is alone, teaching poetry as a visiting professor in Montana and continuing to avoid actually writing himself. He drinks to oblivion every night. At this freezing college, in the dead of winter, Winslow meets Erika, one of his poetry students. What begins with office hours and Jim Beam in paper cups becomes a road trip as they travel through Utah and Arizona. Long haunted by thoughts of death, both Erika and Winslow begin to glimpse show more the power life can hold if they will only open up to the shame, beauty, and heartbreak of it all. show less

A slightly unpleasant novel about a middle-aged poet past his creative prime who takes a visiting professorship. When he becomes close to a troubled student in the class, Erica, the novel walks a thin line between Winslow's concern for her well-being and his earthy appetites, usually coming down on the darker side. Not badly written, but Winslow is a distasteful specimen who is usually unable to place the needs of his students, particularly Erica, above his own.

The rain fell on downtown Portland, not in any kind of unusual way.
Last words*
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)But that's what it feels like in these soft, sunny California afternoons: it feels like she's gathering the strands of the day, trying to remember what happened and why it was important, what she did and what she saw and what she felt; and, gathering the strands, she begins to work them together into a single thing, a thing made out of words, and every one of them begins the same: Dear Richard.
