In an interesting approach to history books, the You Choose series uses a choose-your-own-adventure style in this nonfiction book. The book begins with the reader arriving in America on a boat. From there, you can choose to follow new friends to New York or Lowell, MA or you can continue on as planned to Philadelphia where your cousin lives. As you make each choice, the story changes. You can choose which job to take, whether to learn about unions or colleges, whether to visit the doctor or save your money, etc. etc. Each choice results in a different story, but the introduction assures us that these situations are based on true events. The book ends with a conclusion that sums up the information about Irish immigration. The end show more includes a time line, glossary, index, bibliography, and urges readers to think about even more perspectives.

Although it would be difficult to consider this a reference resource, I think it's got great potential for making history appealing to kids. One thing I like about this particular volume is that it includes stories about men and women.
