Description

If God is loving, why is there suffering? What's the difference between permitting something and ordaining it? When bad things happen, who's behind them--God or the devil? When suffering touches our lives, questions like these suddenly demand an answer. From our perspective, suffering doesn't make sense, especially when we believe in a loving and just God. After more than thirty years in a wheelchair, Joni Eareckson Tada's intimate experience with suffering gives her a special understanding show more of God's intentions for us in our pain. In When God Weeps, she and lifelong friend Steven Estes probe beyond glib answers that fail us in our time of deepest need. Instead, with firmness and compassion, they reveal a God big enough to understand our suffering, wise enough to allow it-and powerful enough to use it for a greater good than we can ever imagine. show less

EncompassedRunner "When God Weeps" addresses suffering of all sorts, stressing that regardless of the type or immediate cause of suffering God's sovereign over it. Mayhue's book on the other hand has a different focus, not the sovereignty of God, but on correctly understanding what the Bible has to say about one type of suffering: illness. For those who were reading When God Weeps out of interest in healing/illness, Mayhue's book is comprehensive in examining it, analyzing every single verse on healing and comparing it to what's taught (or mistaught) about it in the faith healing movement.

The parts written by Joni were excellent, answering a lot of questions about suffering and pain, from her own experience and that of some of her friends. The more formal parts written by Steve Estes were a bit irritating, however, not really answering questions at all but putting his personal doctrinal perspective.
It is difficult to see any purpose in suffering and pain, but God is always in control. His way is best, and He always work all things together for good for those who love Him. This is a well-written book from an author who knows the meaning of suffering and has found rest in the Lord.

When suffering touches our lives we ask "Why?"
