This is book two in the Ladies of Liberty series, but these three books completely stand alone. Read them in any order and you will love the characters no matter what. It was quite shocking to me when I first decided to jump into this book that I read several negative reviews. They called the book preachy, flat and many other comments so that I was not really excited about the read. My goodness, I am almost certain those reviewers must have been reading a very different book indeed! Another work of fiction from Tracie Peterson that brings you into the life of a very strong woman fighting for her will to continue having hope. Trust into circumstances that she never would have thought possible Catherine presents a firm character that is show more very realistic in her thoughts, words, and deeds. This is a story that shows you how callous other humans can be and how damaging one's actions can affect another life when they try with an evil intent. Issues such as politics and countries facing war to social class and standing bring to life a world not much different from current day in many situations. God works in mysterious ways and always on his timeline and not ours. The story of dear Catherine and even a dashing fellow named Carter Danby (reminds me of Mr. Darcy) can show a reader a light into patience and peace because even the worst of times can be formed into the best of times. show less
Somewhat preachy at points, but a good story overall. Characters are somewhat stereotypical/shallow. The plot/storyline are the most interesting parts, although it's meant to be character centered.
Catherine has always lived a life of privilege, until one night her world is turned upside down. Her father is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and Catherine must flee to America with 2 of the family servants. As Catherine tries to survive in America as a seamstress, she cannot forget her father in England. When love begins to bloom, Catherine believes that she can never pursue happiness while her father suffers. However, while her identity as an impoverished lady of means has remained a secret, the time may come when she must reveal herself and face the dangerous consequences.

It is 1850 and Carter Danby of Philadelphia has come to England to study the architecture. While there he attends a party at Nelson Newbury’s, co-owner of a successful shipping company. At the party, Carter meets seventeen-year-old Catherine Newbury and the two enjoy dancing and conversing. Later that night, Catherine overhears her father and his partner quarreling. Nelson’s partner has done some illegal shipping and the authorities are after him. Nelson immediately sends Catherine with a servant couple to America, where they will keep Catherine safe. The three settle in Philadelphia, where Catherine becomes a seamstress. By chance, Carter takes his mother and sister to the dressmaker’s and is introduced to Catherine, who he show more doesn’t immediately place. Catherine is afraid—will her life be exposed?
