Baron Heinrich von Dortmann geniet met volle teugen van alles wat groeit en bloeit in zijn tuin. In elke plant en bloem vindt hij een levensles die hij doorgeeft aan zijn leergierige dochter Sabina. Vlak voor het uitbreken van de tweede wereldoorlog ontmoeten ze Thaddeus McCallum en zijn zoon Matthew. Vader en zoon worden uitgenodigd om een weekend door te brengen bij de baron en zijn gezin op het landgoed ‘Lebenshaus’. Sabina leidt Matthew rond door het gigantische huis, Matthew raakt gefascineerd door het vreemde huis en de mysterieuze geschiedenis, vooral de verhalen van oude Eppie maken hem nieuwsgierig. Ook vader Thaddeus geniet van het leven op het platteland. Het liefst zou hij langer blijven, maar zijn werk als Amerikaanse show more ambassadeur is vooral in deze roerige tijden erg belangrijk.
Wanneer de oorlog uitbreekt worstelt de Baron met de vraag over Gods opdracht voor hem in deze gebeurtenissen.
