"After lunch I read Richard Adlington's new book, All Men are Enemies - it was rather interesting but intensely depressing." (Diary entry, 31 July 1933.) (Pym, A very private eye. Macmillan, 1984. p. 25.)

Part of my project. Words! Lots of words. It reminded me in theme of Demian but it isn't so clean. The hero whines & whines & of course he isn't all wrong but he seems very arrogant.

Now when the immortal gods meet together in council, they speak of many things, and chiefly they lament the twilight that has fallen upon them, the ruined fanes, the neglected sacrifices, and the desolation of the world they would have made a delicious garden where gods might walk with men.
