I love that this book has a nice rhythm to it and uses so many pleasing alliterations that just roll off the reader's tongue. "Carrying seeds, each side scoots along, SKITTER and skate!" The book also utilizes so many onomatopoeias which are a fun way to introduce vocabulary. I loved this book so much because it has plenty of aesthetic illustrations, helpful infographics, and the author uses literary devices in such a clever way. I would use this book alongside the book Plants that Feed me by Lizzy Rockwell during a fruit and vegetable unit.
This is a great book that introduces kids to different types of plants, seeds, and how these seeds are dispersed and find new places to grow. The book is organized first by season and then by climate. Initially, the seeds exhibited are in different seasons and the narration describes how those seeds fit into that season and how they plant themselves. Then the book moves into describing different plants that thrive in different climates. The way the story is written, each seed is introduced with a poetic few sentences that contain onomatopoeia as to how it "floats, flips, or flys" to a new destination where new plants will grow. This book is fun and factual. It also gives definitions to terminology that relates to where seeds are kept in show more many plants as well as other plant related terminology. The illustrations are beautiful and persuade the reader to stop on each page and relate to the seasons or to compare the seeds to anything that the reader has seen before. This is a very fun book! show less
The book Flip, Float, Fly by JoAnn Early Macken is about how different types of seeds may travel around and then grow in different environments. It also talks about different ways seeds are held like fruit, seedpods, and flowers. I would read this book in a classroom lesson on seeds, and how plants grow. Plants can't grow without seeds so I would build this background knowledge before going into what happens to the seed once it is planted. Personally I liked this book. I think it was full of good information and had great illustrations to show what is happening to each seed, and even what different seeds look like!
There are many different kinds of seeds and plants. This book describes each one of them. It explains the cycle they go through. It is beautifully illustrated. This book would be good to show a science class to introduce plants.
