Its been a long time since I've seen It's Alive. Long enough that I'm not sure how faithful/accurate the novelization was. Long enough that while I remember it being kind of a garbage b movie, I also remember liking it despite that. Working with Larry Cohen's script, I think this is still an improvement over my memory of the movie though.
Medical/pregnancy horror, mixed with a mutant monster and thriller like killings...the best of what schlocky b horror has to offer! The book moves fast, our characters (mostly a small nuclear family, a couple of the PR man's coworkers, and some doctors) feel fairly stereotypical for the time and somewhat unlikable, with the possible exception of the one dimensional family friend Charley and the far more show more interesting than anyone else here local cop (the staties are by and large also one dimensional and annoying). Our local cop/hero is probably the sole character that is not only kind of likable, but feels complex enough to have a back story and interior life we don't know about.
You could read a lot into this story...pro or anti abortion? pro or anti fertility drugs (or even modern medicine writ large)? pro environment or anti regulation when it comes to pollution and chemicals? Maybe even some things about gender roles and how we treat women. You *could* read all those things into this. Did Larry Cohen legit put any of that there? I have my doubts. But hey, apply your critical lenses to your hearts' content! show less
