Description

Dion was a healer and a wolfwalker, and the unique telepathic bond that she shared with the wolf Gray Hishn sometimes seemed to amplify her sensitivity to her patients. But she never guessed how strong that bond could be, or what kind of power it could wield, until she found herself lost in the wilderness, with angry slavers at her heels and war on the horizon. Suddenly she and her fellow travelers were fighting for their lives in the snowy winter wastes, where the wolves were their only show more guides, the greatest secret of the ancients their only salvation...and Dion their only hope to survive. show less

IMO, this thing falls apart in the last 100 pages. Dion's "miraculous" discovery seems pretty unlikely given the amount of time that has passed; surely some wolfwalker could have thought of this before? While Harper mentions that the wolfwalkers are rare, I don't get the impression that they are stupid.
was going to give it 4 stars -- interesting characters, unusual and (as far as i can tell) consistent world building. then, i get to the end and discover the story's problems continue into more books: the first book does not tell you it's part of a series, so you expect it to have a satisfying ending.

and then, it doesn't. hallmarks of "architect of sleep" and "hyperion".

I HATE THAT!
I admit I didn't give this book much of a chance, deciding to stop around page 70. All the characters seemed to be the same person with different names and just blended in with each other. It was also somewhat aggravating that all these new creatures were being named, with little to no description of what they actually looked like. Dnu are the most commonly mentioned animal as they are the horses of this world, but all I know is they have six legs and a hairy tail.

This is one I may just be in the wrong mood for. It'll go back on my shelf for a later attempt.
Second half of the book was practically completely irrelevant to plot of first half of book. It was slightly implausible how Dion knew all this scientific terminology like virus and flu when these terms had never come up before and considering the setting. Will not be reading rest of the novels.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to
Sandy Keen
for whom I scrawled this note of friendship on her refrigerator one night:

Dawn crumbling desert slopes
and wind-wrought shapes of dusty stone;
Where the sandy fur... (show all) of the meer cat scrapes lightly through the sod-cut tunnels;
Into heights of wispy thoughts and layered twilights,
where red-eyed hawks lie flat on soft winds;
Dreams, born and living,
Have but one soul,
Have but one soul:
Yours.
~ Sandy Keen
DARK FLIGHT
Oh, moons of mercy, moons of light
Guide me in the darkest night
Keep me safe from evil spirit
Send your blessed light to sear it

Oh, moons of mercy, moons of might
If in shadow, dark, or nig... (show all)ht
My body die with evil near it
Send your light to guide my spirit.
~ Tara K Harper
