Il tema comune ai racconti contenuti in questa raccolta è la convivenza di nuovo e antico che caratterizza l'India. La presenza in strada della Maruti, l'auto più popolare (come la fu nostra Fiat Cinquecento) accanto all'elefante non è che una delle tante manifestazioni di un fenomeno incredibile. Nel subcontinente indiano oggi si intrecciano tradizione e innovazione nei costumi, nella vita quotidiana, nei rapporti umani. Il desiderio di emancipazione fa i conti con i valori di un passato ancora lungi dal deterioramento.
