You know a series is a total failure, when you can remove the main character and the story can unfold the same way without him. Really. Just lift him out of there -- same result.
Bad enough there were more and more dream sequences, for this final volume we are served up a stinking amnesia storyline to boot? Ugh. The absolute dregs of creativity.
So yeah, we get a few more really stupid plot twists and then are asked to feel sympathy for a Nazi who kinda feels bad about the whole, y'know . . . show more Holocaust . . . thingy. Umm, no. No, no, no.
Garbage. show less

It's the closing days of World War II -- HItler is dead and the Soviets surround Berlin -- but a cadre of SS officers are pushing through a Hail Mary nuclear dirty bomb strike on the United States to help their position in negotiations for the end of the war.
At this point in the story we are neck-deep in Nazis doing and planning horrible things, and this is supposed to make the less horrible Nazis or the Nazis starting to question the horrible things more sympathetic? Nuh-uh.
This historical show more fiction has lost its way. show less

In the 1930s in a region of Europe called Silesia, which straddles Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic, three young kids dream of flying. Max Kurtzman, a Polish Jew, will one day emigrate to the United States and fly planes off the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in the Pacific theater of World War II. In this historical fiction, one of his Germanic friends from Silesia will become famous as a female test pilot for the Luftwaffe, the real-life Hanna Reitsch. Suspected by the U.S Army of show more being a Nazi agent, Max finds himself with the choice of facing a firing squad as a traitor or proving his loyalty by undertaking a dangerous mission.
Cutting frequently between a childhood increasingly tainted by Nazi antisemitism and WWII action, it's a pretty engaging set-up, even if Yann is no Garth Ennis when it comes to war fiction. I'm annoyed that my usual library sources do not have the next two volumes. I may actually have to buy them. show less
