Excerpt from Fouche: The Man Napoleon Feared A hasty glance then at the vicissitudes of Fouch 's life seems to show us its varying activities as dark and lacking brilliance, yet important and engrossing to the highest degree. His work throughout was a silent but obstinate and remorseless struggle _to keep himself afloat through the changing currents of the time. And such a fight often means life or death, or, at all events, influence or impotence. And in such case it may only too easily happen that the accepted rules of human life are broken and fail under the strain of suffering, whilst the primitive instinct of self-preservation brutally tramples beneath its feet all the laws of humanity and consideration for others. It is said that in deep water there is sometimes no way of escape from the convulsive grip of a drowning man other than ruthlessly to free one.
