Cow's birthday is coming up so Cow's pals are preparing to make the best cake ever. Except that Duck keeps wanting to add a turnip ...

This was another fun read from Jan Thomas and the "Giggle Gang" series. Young readers will immediately identify with the common occurrence of a birthday and cake, and then laugh at the unexpected twist of the turnip.

The illustrations are simple enough with bold outlines and bright colors that fit the tone and spirit of the book well.

This book was about a pig, mouse, and a duck that are going to make cow a birthday cake. But duck had only turnips on the brain. Pig and mouse are irritated over it but turns out cow loved the turnip but didn't acknowledge the cake.
This was a colorful and easy to follow book. I really like this author. This would be a good book on a birthday in the classroom. Students can easily follow along and make predictions.
This book has wonderful pictures and colors. The story is good too. It talks about a group of friends wanting to make a cake for their friend and the duck only wanted to give a turnip. What was unexpected is the cow ended up having much appreciation for the turnip and nobody else was expecting that.
A follow up to last year's What Will Fat Cat Sit On?, A Birthday for Cow is another humorous story for toddlers, featuring the same cast of characters - mouse, pig, duck and cow.
It's cow's birthday, and the animals are making him a birthday cake. While pig and mouse carefully follow the cake recipe, duck tries without success to add what he believes is a key ingredient - a turnip!

The text is short and simple, "Next, they mix it all together with... " "A TURNIP!" "No, Duck. A SPOON."

Toddlers should enjoy the bold and bright illustrations, even if they miss some of the dry humor, "Sometimes I brush my teeth using a turnip." "Really? Me, too!"

Each page has a brightly colored background of blue, pink, or green, and the animals are show more cartoon-style - wide-eyed and expressive. Cute! show less

This book's use of fun illustrations and bright and engaging colors make for a fun read for beginning/young readers. The theme of the story is light-hearted, about the celebraion of a birthday which can be a fun and exciting topic for readers. The use of animals as the characters can also peak the interest of young children.

The age range for this book would be k-2nd grade. This is a cute story about some friends making a birthday cake for their friend, Cow. Throughout the story duck wants to keep putting a turnip in the cake but the friends keep saying no. When Cow comes he gets more excited seeing duck holding the turnip then the cake. This book would be fun to read on someone's birthday in the classroom.
