Kate Grenville's bearded ladies live on the fringe of things, where nothing is quite as it seems. Their beards are invisible, but the women, and men, in these highly acclaimed black comedies are just as out of step and out of place as if they were in a side show.

I enjoyed these short stories about women who all were rather 'dark'. I particularly liked 'Having a Wonderful Time' about the bus trip to Athens and the fellow travellers on the journey. You could recognise similar experiences and people you encounter when in a closed situation. 'Meeting the Folks' was also particularly interesting insofar as thinking about how often we put up with unacceptable situations for a variety of reason. ( )

Book description
These bearded ladies live on the fringe things, where nothing is quite as it seems. Their beards are invisible, but the women -- and men -- in these highly acclaimed black comedies are just as out of step and out of place as if they were in a side show.

Thirteen stories deal with a lone traveler, a brief affair, an elderly spinster, a betrayed wife, a favorite aunt, a reunion of former roommates, and a woman's first meeting with her potential mother-in-law
