"JOHN COTTON was one of the greatest scholars and preachers of seven-teenth-century New England. Born in Derby, England in 1584, he served for twenty years as vicar of the church of St. Botolph's in Boston, Lincolnshire. In 1633 his long-standing difficulties with the ecclesiastical came to a head and, resigning his charge, he embarked for America. From the first, Cotton was a leading figure in Massachusetts' political and religious affairs; he took a major part in the disputes of his time, show more most notably two intense controversies with Roger Williams. In addition to polemical pamphlets, Cotton wrote works on prayer and Church music, and, above all, treatises on the theory and methods of Congregationalism as practiced in New England. A Sermon Delivered at Salem(1636), The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven(1644), and the Way of the Congregational Church Cleared(1648), reprinted here for the first time, are three of Cotton's most important works. In these writing, which set out in classic terms the principles of New England Congregationalism, John Cotton" speak more directly to twentieth-century concerns about liberty and authority than he does elsewhere," the editor writes in his Introduction," and make clear that argument of ecclesiastical polity in his day were not hair-split squabbles but central debates about the terms on which men in England and America would live with on anther."
