Description

In this wickedly funny crime novel, Lillian Byrd is a small-time reporter with a flair for making big mistakes - like getting fired for rejecting the boss's son - so her investigation into the disappearances of women around the Detroit area might not be the best idea. But when one of the missing women turns up dead and Lillian recognises the curiously mutilated corpse, she's in too deep to get out. After blowing the case for the police and revealing herself to the killers, she has only show more herself to blame - well, almost. show less

This was a very enjoyable mystery, quite scary at times but not so much that I had to stop reading. I really liked the characters, all of them but especially the main one. She makes all sorts of mistakes and stupid choices because she’s so human and real.
So, I’m on to the second one.
Decent book with a likeable enough protagonist but the final solution wasn't very credible IMHO. I did love the part where she got herself fired.
Worked at Borders with Elizabeth so was excited to read her book. Much grittier than I expected, but mostly plausible for a mystery novel.

Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)I thought about people who can't handle what God gives them and decide to take it out on the rest of us. Hunkering down, I plucked a stem of clover and chewed it. The hawk, a red-tail, dropped like a stone from the sky. In a minute it was up again, climbing, talons empty, starting all over.
