Good research into details of Icelandic life in the 11th century and a plot with action and interest. I probably would have kept the book if it had not been missing two pages, one of which may have explained why the 12 year old male protagonist experienced a sudden and profound change of character close to the end of the story. 'But the presence of Odin-worshipping, witchlike Elfreya (strangely, an Irishwoman in contrast to the newly Christianized Icelanders) and of Orm, her infantile, paralytic son (supposedly destined to become a king once the curse of idiocy is lifted) set in motion properly icy and eery vibrations.'
