I think is an amazing adaptation. I loathed the Pride and Prejudice film with Keira Knightley, and a lot of the reason is that for me the additions, changes and omissions from the original jarred. With Emma Thompson's screenplay, her words felt seamless to me, as if she plugged into Austen's head. It's a great film, a favorite--one that not only made me cry more than once when I saw it in the cinema, but made me cry again in exactly the same spots when I rewatched on DVD. It was in fact one of the first DVD purchases I ever made, and I loved what a DVD brought to my experience--not just the ability to watch whenever I wanted, but additions such as the commentaries by Thompson and Lee. This is one of the films in the nineties that caused show more a popular resurgence for Jane Austen's books--and little wonder. show less
While inevitably a film is different from a book, with less introspection and more visuals, I felt that this adaptation was very faithful to the original. My husband hasn’t read the book, but enjoyed the film, vaguely recalling the first time we saw it. There were one or two places where we chuckled, mostly at the wonderfully ironic and brilliantly timed asides from Mr Palmer, perfectly cast as Hugh Laurie.
Highly recommended.

Good adaptation by Emma Thompson. She is far too old for the role of Elinor but her acting in it is wonderful. Winslet is good as a very young Marianne. Hugh Grant makes a surprisingly good Edward. Rickman is too old both in years and manner for Brandon. But worth seeing and having.
C+ (Okay).
Two sisters have romantic troubles.
There are lots of great little moments sprinkled throughout. But it's never a compelling story, and it drags a lot.

This is one of my absolute favourite films. I love it and have seen it numerous times. It's dramatic, humourous and romantic.
A lovely adaption of Austen's book, though Grant is miscast. Rickman, on the other hand, makes an excellent job. The, different, desperation of the two sisters, makes a compelling view.
I enjoyed this book by Jane Austen. I thought that the beginning was a little rough and hard to get through but then it started to pick up. I think though, that I will need to read it again just to really appreciate it.
