This is one of those books that I return to over the years - but even more so, it is one of those books I keep giving away, and buying again. Whenever I see a copy I buy it, because, I know I'll come to a point where I want to give it away again.

The gentlest, wisest intro to self-reflection and mediation. I subsequently read all of Levine's other work, but this one is a classic - he reached beyond himself and pulled through some wisdom that cannot be out done.

Enjoy, rest in it; sit.

Wow, this is a fantastic book on Vipassana meditation. Funny story as to why I read it now – a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to read something on meditation, having recently started a practice again. So, I was looking on my shelves for "It's Easier Than You Think," which I remember as being a good book. But in looking, this book caught my eye, and I thought, "Hmnh. What is that? I didn't remember buying it, and I wasn't sure what it was about based on the title." So, I pulled it out, and, well, lookie here! It's about meditation! Well, if that's not a sign, I don't know what is. Turns out I must have read at least parts of it before, since a couple of the pages were dogeared, but I don't remember much of it at all. It's a show more wonderful book, with lots of discussion on Vipassana (or mindfulness) meditation, and a few guided meditations to try, as well. Plus there's lots of general spiritual guidance here. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn to meditate, or go deeper with their practice. show less

Poet and teacher of meditation Dr. Steven Levine writes simply and gently about his personal experiences with and insights into vipassana meditation. A Gradual Awakening is an inspiring book for anyone who is interested in deep personal growth.
This is the single best introduction to meditation that I have ever read. This is the book that I give to friends who ask me where to start. Strongly recommended for beginners at all levels of experience.
The best book about meditation I've ever read. I read it when I was sixteen and when I was thirty. It was fabulous both times.
The author has taught meditation in the California prison system, where he met Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. He then began leading workshops with her. Kubler-Ross said of this work, "[It is] a simply and gently written book by a man who shares his own personal experiences and insights into how meditation can work and how we can become aware of ourselves. A beautiful book, recommended for anyone interested in their own deep growth."

This book includes a reading list and is well-indexed.
