Description

A haunting story of love and loss in the Hebrides . . . Island-born Kirsty MacLennan marries Ruari MacDonald in order to escape city life and a menial job in a guest house, and return to her beloved homeland. As she rediscovers her roots, and adapts to married life on the idyllic Westisle, there is only one thing standing in the way of her future happiness - the brooding presence of her brother-in-law, who shares Kirsty and Ruari's home.

A book that felt like it was set 200 years ago, but probably takes place only in the 1950's--however, the feel of it is very very old and timeless.
It is a very short novel about a "spinster" Kirsty has been working in a guest house for 30 years in the "town" and meets Ruari, a 45 year old batchelor who takes her as his wife to live on a deserted Westisle in a croft with only his brother for company.
½
An occasionally awkwardly written short novel of a woman who marries unexpectedly and goes to live on a small Scottish island with her husband and his dour brother-in-law.
