I feel I am about to be excessively harsh about this book. Because it's good, it's solid, there is nothing wrong with it. But it's not as good as SkyPoint and Slow Decay, the other two Torchwood novels that I've read so far. Possibly it's because they were very good indeed. This doesn't have quite the same depth of characterisation as those two (although I loved the bits with Rhys shopping for the wedding), and the plot doesn't grab me quite as much because of that.

But it's still worth reading and enjoyable, just not quite so good as some of the others in the same line.
What do we want from tie-book? Solid characterization, that the characters sound like the original we know and love. Pack Animals does this and is entertaining too. The plot is a little foggy in places but the author doesn't shy away from what makes Torchwood fun and attractive. Namely, Jack being Jack, competent Gwen, amusing Rhys and putting forward Cardiff and making it real and interesting. A good tie in reads like an episode without the special effects that the production couldn't have afforded anyway. This one makes the cut.
Several of my friends regularly watch/watched Dr Who and Torchwood. I managed to never get into Torchwood when it was on the air. I was familiar with the characters and concepts due to catching bits and pieces of the show or hearing friends discuss some point or other. I'm more of a reader than TV watcher, so I started reading this series as I was interested enough to see what it was all about. At first, I had assumed the novels would just retell the events from the TV show, but these are totally different stories. The books do occasionally touch on stuff that happened in the show as the events they portray sort of happen between episodes. After reading the first 12 novels in this series, I actually went back and watched the whole show, show more too, since I liked the characters so much. show less
Not my favorite Torchwood book. Too many gruesome deaths, and the story only gets interesting after that (which is about halfway through the book).

Ianto turns invisible and Jack saves they day while riding a flying unicorn. Also, everyone else is super-competent and awesome. MADE OF WIN.

A Torchwood novel set towards the end of Season 2, with Owen already dead but still walking and alien creatures intruding on Earth via sets of game cards (so the 'pack' of the title has a dual meaning). Another good effort from Anghelides, reinforcing my view that the Torchwood novels are an insufficiently recognised literary achievement of the Whoniverse.
Slightly confusing but enjoyable.
