The Past Is a Foreign Country

Anche questo libro, come tutti i suoi sinora letti, mi è piaciuto moltissimo.
Una storia ben scritta, con personaggi perfettamente caratterizzati e che riescono ad esprimere nel miglior modo possibile la contraddittorietà della giovinezza dove basta un nulla, in questo caso un’amicizia casuale, per stravolgere un’esistenza apparentemente già programmata.
Imperdibile come tutti i libri di Carofiglio.

Non c'è Guerrieri e avevo paura mi mancasse. Non è stato così. Forse il miglior Carofiglio che abbia letto finora. Il gioco del poker, una compagnia totalizzante, esperienze che tirano verso il basso, che più in basso non si può. Due storie parallele (di cui una poliziesca) che si incrociano ad un certo punto ma senza che fosse scontato. Insomma, un bel romanzo, scritto bene, che appassiona, coinvolge e alla fine, manca.

Non appena viene introdotto il personaggio del capitano, si capisce istantaneamente come il romanzo va a finire e tutto il thriller pubblicizzato in quarta di copertina sfuma. Per un giallo i personaggi sono troppo pochi, le parti dedicate all'investigazione ancora meno. Rimane l'elemento psicologico, ma i comportamenti di quasi tutti i personaggi sembrano illogici e inspiegabili, e a volte irritano facendo aspettare con inpazienza il capitolo investigativo di cui pero' gia' si conosce l'esito. Peccato, perche' poi non e' scritto per niente male e riesce a catturare il lettore senza problemi, solo lo sviluppo della trama e' un po' deludente. Avevo aspettative su questo testo, che in parte sono state esaudite. Si legge bene, anche se a volte scivola nel didascalico. Mi ha ricordato DeCarlo - senza gli improbabili nomi dei suoi personaggi e senza le solite fughe da Milano.
Romanzo asciutto, secco, solido; con pochi grigi, se si vuole trovargli un difetto. Ambientato in una Puglia borghese che di solito non si conosce, tra vizi di cui spesso si sente soltanto favoleggiare, è un credibile romanzo che narra di un brusco passaggio tra una giovinezza di studi, fidanzate e famiglia ad una realta' completamente differente, pericolosa e in bilico.

Italian noir. Giorgio, a young law student, falls under the influence of Francesco, a charismatic criminal adept at cheating at cards. As he makes more money, his life spirals down with more serious law breaking. A parallel story involves some cops looking for a rapist. The two stories are imbalanced, with too much detail in the second story. The ending is something of a surprise and gives the book its title. Light reading, that never became ominous for me.

This was my first book of the author [[Gianrico Carofiglio]], which I have read, but certainly not the last. You can tell that the author has great knowledge of the mafia machinations, he has worked for years as an anti-Mafia prosecutor in Bari.
This story takes place in Bari. The main characters are two young students. One works and learns determined jurisprudence while the other is enrolled at the University, but this he looks from afar. Giorgio, the aspiring student will forfeit the adventure and the sinister machinations of the other. Naive as Giogio is, he plays with Francesco poker. He sees fast that he can manipulate the poker games in their favour with the choirboy Giorgio. They share the profit. The money attracts and Giorgio show more decides therefore to put his studies on hold. He sinks more and more into the forbidden game, breaking all social contacts, also from his family.
Giorgio noted only very late that he is being manipulated by Francesco. This goes so far that he pulls Giorgio into drug business. It takes a long time until Giorgio realizes that he has to get off. It was only when he notices that Fracesco is yet wanted for another offense, that he succeeds the exit. show less
