Paris Doğabilimleri Müzesi'nden Profesör Aronnax, Amerika Donanma Bakanı'ndan bir mektup alır. Ticaret yollarını tehdit eden bir deniz canavarının yakalanması amacıyla düzenlenen bir sefere katılması istenmektedir. Uşağı ile birlikte gemiye binen profesör, altı ay süren yolculuk sonunda canavara ilişkin hiçbir veri elde edemez. Derken yaşadıkları deniz kazası sonucunda kendilerini bu devasa canavarın sırtında bulurlar. Profesör Aronnax, uşağı Conseil ve zıpkıncı Ned Land'i okyanusun azgın sularından kurtaran, muhteşem denizaltısı Nautilus'la kendisine denizler altında bir dünya kuran Kaptan Nemo'dan başkası değildir.
