Description

The first collection by Sweden's foremost contemporary playwright NIGHT OF THE TRIBADES (1975) centres around the triangular relationship between August Strindberg, the actress Marie Caroline David and Siri von Essen. It has been translated into twenty languages including a short run on Broadway. THE IMAGE MAKERS (1998) deals with Selma Lagerlof's father and his alcoholism whilst THE RAIN MAKERS is a fascinating study of Hans Christian Anderson. THE HOUR OF THE LYNX: "Enquist's play, show more feelingly translated from the Swedish offers a profound exploration of spirituality, love and faith within a text that is grippingly dramatic, unfailingly absorbing and often upliftingly lyrical." "At a time when young writers were looking for new forms of literary expression, Enquist settled for an investigative style, and attempt to reconstruct events reported to have happened, but where the truth is often too inaccessible... it was a style that was to remain Enquist's literary landmark characterising both his novels and his plays" Contemporary World Authors ed. Enquist is a giant of contemporary Swedish literature, and his historical novels have won an international readership. No surprise, then, that this first presentation in English of theatrical pieces includes dramatizations featuring Strindberg, Selma Lagerlof, and Hans Christian Anderson (who is shown as amusingly, appalling clueless). They're fine pieces for the stage; they go cracking along with plenty of confrontation among small casts of characters. The UK premiers of these pieces took place in 1978, 1990 and 1996; only the last, featuring Lagerlof, has no UK theatre date. The more's the pity, since the original was directed by Ingmar Bergman in 1998. From the (very useful) introduction by Gunilla Anderman: "In an interview on the show more eve of the opening night, Bergman tells of receiving the script, described as a play about the creation of a play, only to realise that he had previously met or worked with all the charactersappearing in Enquist's documentary material drawn from the silent film era." show less

Enquist's writing is characterized by political consciousness and an interest in the past as it affects or reflects the present. During the politicized 1960s, Enquist was a principle practitioner of documentarism. He is both an important playwright and a novelist. (Bowker Author Biography) Per Olov Enquist is one of Sweden's most acclaimed show more writers; a novelist, playwright and poet with works published in 26 countries.
