When we were kids, my little sister and I used to think this was the funniest book ever written. At the part where Morris (as a babysitter) puts the pajama bottoms over the little boy's head, we laughed so hard our tummies ached, rolling on the floor and gasping for breath; and then we'd pick up the book and try to read again, only to dissolve once more in in helpless hilarity. Ok, maybe you had to be there.
Whether such sophisticated humor translates into the new millenium, I have my doubts. But I also have my memories, and you can't take that away from either of us.

Morris the Moose is an entertaining beginner's book. Morris sees a cow and thinks the cow is a moose...like him. Morris then sees a deer and thinks the deer is a moose...like him. The deer also thinks Morris is a deer and it starts to get all tangled. A horse comes along and doesn't help much until it suggests they get a drink from a stream. They see their own reflections and realize their differences. This could be a fun book for a beginning reader and the message of our similarities and differences is a valuable one.
"Know thyself."

I think learning what Wartenberg has to say about it spoiled it for me; I might like the story better on my own terms. I will investigate the rest of the Morris stories.

Morris the Moose is a very fun story filled with humor. Morris assumes that other animals with four legs, a tail, and things on their heads are moose like him. He must meet a cow, a deer, and a horse before learning the truth. All the animals must discover their difference by gazing at their reflection in a pool of water.
the storyis delightfully funny and imaginative when the animals are all trying to figure out who they are and whether they are the same or not.
Morris thinks that everyone with stuff on their head and four legs is a moose like him. The deer and horse are similarly confused, but the cow is just insulted. Looking in the water, Morris realizes his mistake, which, in a horrible pun, he calls a “moosestake”.
Summary: This book is about a Moose named Morris. Morris comes to a cow and tries to convince the cow that it is a Moose like Morris. Morris is very persistent with the Cow so they decide to ask the Deer if the Cow is a Moose or not. The Deer thinks the Cow and Morris the Moose are Deer. They go to ask another animals opinion but stop to get a drink of water first. Once they see their reflection off the water, then they realize they all look different. Response: It is a very cute and funny book. Connection: Great beginning book for kids to read in a small group or on their own. Kids would love this book and the humor!
