Because I was only a baby when the Sandman single issue comics were being released I am extremely glad that this collection of the original covers was published. Someday, I might be lucky enough to have some of the original issues, but for now I'll have to be satisfied with the collected edition graphic novels and supplementary commentary publications.

This book is very useful not only as a mode of collection, but as a presentation of additional commentary by McKean and Gaiman on the creative process behind the creation of the cover imagery. I especially found their ongoing argument about fish hilarious, and the synchronicity of having them create a story and cover with fish on a leash without actual discussion was an interesting piece of trivia about the series and the creative process. Although great in itself, the writing of the Sandman series would not stand alone as one of the greatest work of fiction ever. It requires the assistance of its great artists to rise to true greatness.

One of the artists most influential in defining Sandman as a series is Dave McKean. In this book are presented all the covers of Sandman in a beautiful way along with some of McKean's other art. The art pieces that make up the covers are made even more stunning by the artist's (and Gaiman's) explanations about their backgrounds and the life surrounding the creation of Sandman.

This book has made McKean into one of my favourite artists in one go. ( )
