Whether you're a beginner or need to refresh your neglected chess skills, Patrick Wolff's guide book on chess is excellent. Clearly written, filled diagrams and extremely informative. There are many how-to-play-chess books out there, but this is the one to have.
This book has several easy to follow diagrams and explains everything thoroughly. I easily learned several chess techniques from this book in a short period of time.
