Another in Peter Handke's series of "Versuche" (in all, I think he wrote 5), this one philosophizes on the topic of carpe diem. What do we mean when we say "this was a successful day"? How do we define what makes a day "successful"? Rather than evaluating the sum of things we accomplish, shouldn't we instead learn to appreciate the ray of sunlight that falls through the shades across the room in the late afternoon, the sound of our footsteps in freshly fallen snow or the laughter of children playing?
