A nice textbook-style telling of church history from a somewhat conservative perspective.
This edition of Christianity Through the Centuries discussing events and developments in the church into the 1970s. The author not only explains the development of doctrines, movements, and institutions, but also gives attention to "the impact of Christianity on its times and to the mark of the times on Christianity."
Thorough but book just doesn't grab my attention. This is useful for either a good resource/ reference, or curing a bad case of insomnia.
Christianity Through the Centuries is a proven standard text for introductory classes in church history. Is has been extended and updated, including a new chapter bringing the history of the church through the 1970s, as well as more maps, charts, and illustrations. Dr. Cairns work will help students understand the present by a careful study of the past. The importance of the church's articulation of its faith through its creedal statements can best be understood in the light of historical developments.
Useful intro. Pages numbers near the crease is annoying.
