I attempted to read this book as an assignment in the game thread Go Review That Book on LibraryThing. This is the penultimate book in a series and I had not read the preceding books in the series. I do not feel it works well as a standalone as it refers to things that most likely happened in previous series volumes without a lot of explanation.
