The Girl with Green Eyes

Another Betty Neels novel, my guilty pleasure. This was a particularly fun one. It was slightly different than the usual formula. Rather than a Dutch doctor and British nurse, we have the love story of a British doctor and a British woman who works as a caregiver at an orphanage. And Lucy, though generally somewhat meek and shy, decides at first sight that she wants to marry William, and actively resolves to do it, though she has no clear idea how to pull this off. We do have the standard evil society lady trying to get her hooks into the handsome wealthy doctor and spreading lies to provide the conflict that could be satisfactorily resolved at the end. But rather than passively sitting about, our Lucy, once the truth has been revealed, show more marches off to get her man rather than waiting for him to show up at her door. The Girl With the Green Eyes by Betty Neels; (4*)

Neels is an author to count on for a calm and relaxing, if a bit predictable read. Her stories are full of interesting details about Dutch and British culture and the life style of the mid 20th century. Never disturbing, always interesting, a book to put down and come back to. She never fails to entertain the old fashioned romantic in me.
The digital format is great and a good way to save Neels books to return to when you just need a nice, peaceful read.
In this one the doctor is 'sort of' engaged to an egomaniacal woman who really has no interest in her fiance's friends, work, life....they are so mismatched. He is a man of many interests, one of which is the nurse who has relocated show more temporarily to fill in at his hospital to relieve the shortage of staff nurses. This story, while not original, was very enjoyable to me. I find that the more I read of Betty Neels books, the more I like them. show less
