Nicholas Duck puts on a Santa hat and suddenly every animal he meets is telling him what they want for Christmas. Nicholas eventually runs into Santa and gives him all the info about what the others want for presents. After he goes home, he realizes that he never asked Santa for anything for himself. Finally he decides that helping Santa was the best present; of course he wakes up the next morning with a real present under the tree.
This is a mildly cute story with cartoony illustrations. The figures are everything in the art - there's limited to no background detail in most scenes.
Nicholas is mildly cranky and the animals who ask him for help are sweetly insistent on his santa-ness. There's a cute little "Jingle quack jingle quack" show more refrain running throughout the story. I enjoyed it, it was a quick read, and the uncomplicated clean-lined drawings would probably be good for a storytime. But it's nothing special! show less

The day before Christmas, Nicholas Duck received an unexpected gift. Someone had left him a Santa suit! He put it on and frolicked merrily on his way. Soon, however, other animals started coming up to him listing off things they wanted for Christmas and calling him Santa Duck. Nicholas was confused and got so frustrated he ran away. He ran and ran until suddenly he ran right into the actual Santa Claus! Santa thanked him for all his help and hoped he would help him out again next year. Nicholas went to bed on Christmas Eve not worried about what gifts he might receive, but was just happy with being able to help Santa.
David Milgrim uses a mixture of narration and speech bubble dialogue throughout this book. The words inside each speech show more bubble are hand written, compared to the standard font that makes up the narration. The speech bubbles also differ in size, depending on how Milgrim wants the reader to depict the level of volume the characters are speaking in. The reader will be able to tell that big, bold speech bubbles are for louder voices, while smaller ones are for softer voices. Also, in quite a few speech bubbles Milgrim includes musical notes to indicate a character is singing instead of just talking. show less

This funny story is about a duck who's on his way to find Santa. Before starting out, he dons a red and white cap and coat. As he walks along, all of the other animals stop to ask for their Christmas wishes. The turtle wants a race car, the squirrel wants cases of nuts and a shovel...speech bubbles allow the characters' voices to shine through. Finally, the duck bumps into the real Santa and he finds himself caring less about his own wishes and more about the wishes of his friends. Funny story with a great message.
There is a nice balance between written text and speech bubbles. Interesting humour with a some subtle changes. e.g. Jingle quack.
A fun, simple story for the holidays.

Christmas isn't about getting the gifts, it is about helping others. That feels better than any gift.
