Hari Rhodes survived as a black person until he enlisted, with a forged signature in the US Marines. He survived the segregated training Camp at port Montford in North Carolina. He was part of the force that fought in Korea and finally left the Forces, and became a mostly television actor. This is his war novel, and it is a very good one, deserving a reprint, nowadays.
