Description
Perhaps the most critical election campaign in American history, in the midst of the Civil War, this election determined the very future of the nation. Would the country be unified or permanently divided? Would slavery continue? Weaving corroborative detail and rich anecdotal material into a fast-paced narrative, author Waugh places this pivotal election in its proper context while evoking its rich human drama. Waugh, a former newspaper correspondent, proves that history need not be dry: he show more uses his journalistic skills to infuse the pages with the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of those times. Drawing from an extensive array of sources, including published and unpublished reminiscences, memoirs, autobiographies, letters, newspapers, and periodicals, he clearly evokes the drama and uncertainty of that fateful year with all the immediacy of a political reporter covering a national presidential election today.--From publisher description. show lessTags

An interesting read about perhaps the most important election in our nation's history. It also serves as a powerful remineder that despite all the rhetoric of our elected officials and talking heads, our country is not currently "the most divided it has ever been." It was clearly more so in 1864, yet peaceful, democratic elections were still able to go forward.
A great book about that pivotal election year. I am biased, of course, because I met the author who signed my copy of the book.
pop history of the events of 1864
After months of slogging along, I have finally arrived at Lincoln's nomination to run for a second term in the Presidency. I sure hope I'll finish.
