It seems his beloved Uncle Trapspringer is being held prisoner by the venerable council of elders—until Tas honors Kender marriage tradition, that show more is.

But before he can say “I do,” Tasslehoff’s betrothed pulls a disappearing act of her own. The race is on to see who gets dragged to the altar first. But not only must Tas dodge matrimony, he must elude a capricious wizard set on pickling one of every creature on Krynn, cheer up the last existing woolly mammoth, foil a most determined and deadly assassin, and—in the end—save Kendermore.

The Second book in the Preludes series, a recounting of the actions of the main characters from the Saga 5 years before its events. This book follows Tasselhoff Burrfoot, the kender with a nose for trouble. He is taken by a bounty hunter to fulfil his homeland’s marriage tradition and to free his uncle being held as ransom. He travels great distances, meeting gnomes, half-orcs, dwarves and minotaur. The book ends with his foiling the Dark Queen attempts to enter the material realm and saving his city from destruction and disaster. The pace of the text was slow, even during the action parts. It was something of an odd feeling, as it seemed hard to plow through at times, despite its light nature. Like the volume before it and many of show more the spin-offs, the material doesn’t seem to live up to the nature of the original. The characterization of the principals, the settings, and races seem to be alright but the way they are taken for these original works seems like a step too far, like each author is trying to pack more and more into their texts than the last. At times, it seems to contradict some of the original text insofar as the amount of experience and travel seen in these preludes would prevent some of the major events of the main series from occurring. While it is not bad, it is an awkward read. show less
Tasslehoff Burrfoot is a kender, a race known for their light-fighers, fearlessness, and love of a good story. Tasslehoff has been summoned back home to marry, but he's really not too interested in settling down just yet. The mayor sends a bounty hunter off after him and on their way back, they encounter quite an adventure. They travel across the world of Krynn to encountering freak storms on the sea, mad wizards that want to pickle him for their museum, treasure hunters, and a sinister force out to stop them.

Tasslehoff has always been one of my favorite characters in the DragonLance world and he doesn't disappoint in this story. It is a fun romp through the world from a kender's perspective. While reading previous books in the series show more may help understand some of the finer points of the story, it is not necessary in order to enjoy the story.

These early Dragonlance novels are somewhat disappointing. They aren't bad, but the writing seems a little unpolished, or perhaps written for a slightly younger audience. They also aren't structured the best....this often feels more like a series of unrelated events than it does a novel. Still, there are some enjoyable characters here.
Kendermore is all about Tas. It starts with Tas being shang-haid from Solace by a bounty huntress charged with bringing Tas back to Kendermore to get married. From there it follows him on his journey back to his hometown as he escapes from captivity several times, survives natural disasters, eludes a very determined assassin, barely avoids becoming the kender equivalent of a dinosaur display in a museum, and still has the wherewithal to foil the Dark Queen's attempt to enter the Prime Material Plane from the Abyss. All in a day's work...

I found the premises easier to accept in this volume than what was in the first volume of the Preludes trilogy. Something I wasn't too keen on, though, was the dwarves observing a very bavarian show more Oktoberfest complete with leiderhosen, beer, and tuba/accordian music. I'm just not a big fan of taking the cheap way out on those things. Instead of coming up with a truly dwarven fall festival experience, the author decided to grab one from the real world. Blah.

It kind of lost me along the way. It was just too random, and I didn't care enough about the characters. I quit halfway through, right about when the plotline quit making sense. Besides that, I felt like the regular Dragonlance characters got out of character a lot. Tasslehoff was way too solemn, and the author emphazised Tanis' good looks way too much. I mean, sure, he's adorable, but she just went on and on... I think it's pretty clear who her favorite is. =)
This only got three stars, because Tas happens to be my favorite of the DL characters and the whole book was about him. (Even have a cat named Tasslehoff Burrfoot...Tas)

HOWEVER, once the DL books begin to be written by other authors than the original pair...they're relatively crap. This is MUCH better than the Jean Rabe books though.
