Description

Her name is not Nina, but that's the name she uses sometimes. At her local bar, in the carpark with her tricks, when she needs to score. She doesn't really need the money. But it lays bare the truth of each loveless transaction.

This is not for everyone.
As her unnamed narrator wrestles with human cruelty and her own demons, Lewis drives her brutal story home with prose as sharp and smooth as a knife. But within the bleakness are fleeting moments of grace.

Oh, god, it’s so beautiful and sad, this book. It’s the kind of book that takes recovering from, the type of book that you’re almost thankful you don’t see more of—but then after a while you’re not.

Common Knowledge

First words
Heather Lewis was not the role model my parents would have chosen for me, but she was my ideal. Queer, determined, brilliant, and tall, I would definitely have thrown myself at her had we ever met. We overlapped in N... (show all)ew York during the last years of her life, which were my first in the city, but I was still a teenager and we surely bought our drugs from different vendors, brought them home to different scenes. If I'd arrived a few years earlier and gotten sober quicker, we might have sat in the same church basements in the Village. -Introduction, Melissa Febos
For the longest time I didn't call it turning tricks. When I'd leave work, cross the street to the train station and, if some guy - man, I guess really you'd call him - had come off the train, was on his way home, I'd take hi... (show all)s money. -Chapter One
