An interesting piece of history sets the scene for this book. Isabella is the love of Fletcher Christian, of mutiny of the Bounty fame. The story is told from her point of view. Although she is in love with him, as an heiress, her family push her towards her other, more appropriate cousin. Fletcher goes off to sea, Isabella marries her respectable cousin. A story of unfulfilled love and a mutiny.

Interesting book, but not quite up to the standard of her detective stories. ( )

An adequate historical romance/historical novel, revolving around the Mutiny on the Bounty. The story is narrated by Isabella Curwen, presented in this book as Fletcher Christian's cousin and childhood love; she sets off to sea and she marries another cousin. Envy and jealousy, conspiracies abound; they aren't all terribly plausible, and some seem to have been set in place simply to bring together lose narrative strands or make sense of incompatible dates. It's a fun "what if", but don't expect anything more than that. (And the narrator, Isabella, is downright annoyingly naive and silly, even for her era and age.) If you're interested in the Bounty saga and the unanswered and unanswerable question of whether Christian might have tried to return to England, a far better book is Val McDermid's "The Grave Tattoo".
