[This is a review of The Story of the Amulet] This is the third volume in Nesbit's trilogy featuring the eponymous five children from the first book and their magical adventures with the Psammead, a creature they find in the sand in the countryside in the first book. This follows the same pattern, with the children's ill-considered wishes landing them in all sorts of scrapes, this time travelling back in time to a variety of ancient civilisations, Egypt (in a couple of different time periods), Babylon, ancient Britain (briefly) at the time of Julius Caesar's abortive invasion of 55 BC, and even Atlantis at the time of its destruction. The changes of scene keep up the pace quite well, and this is a good book, though perhaps the formula show more was wearing a bit thin by this time. show less
