Secret Lives is a collection of vignettes describing the bizarre and hidden alternate lives of thirty-six characters. As you read these charming studies, you realize that you are engaged in an illicit voyeurism, not at all sanctioned by any of the characters, but permitted by the omniscient insight of the author. It feels as if Vandermeer has discovered a little window in the back alley of these people's lives, and then he pulls you into his prurience with exuberance.

Different from Vandermeers typical fare but even Vandermeers typical fare is not typical fare. ( )
