If you want to increase kids' interest in poetry, this is the perfect collection to share with them. Included are over a 100 of Prelutsky's works that kids will find entertaining, funny, creative, and imaginative! Colorful and fun illustrations by author/illustrator Brandon Dorman add to the book. You'll hear lots of giggles as students enjoy the silliness of these poems. "Imagine if your precious nose were sandwiched in between your toes, that clearly would not be a treat, for you'd be forced to smell your feet."
Be Glad your nose is on your face is a collection of poems entitled and inspired by his Nose Poem “Lesson learned”. Thinking of our nose as a mind set, we know when its where it should be and when its wandered. Like a face without a nose, it becomes obvious to others when we’re making their business our own. We become freakish, something to be gawked at. Thanks to our nosiness, we are made to feel unwanted. We no longer like ourselves. The once curious soul has now become the material of curiosity.

Through Prelutsky’s direct, understandable language, his underlying meaning becomes clear. As his imagery is geared towards children, it is a comfortable way to teach any age group to mind their own business. By reading this poem along show more with a young person, we are given the same message, but through their eyes. Jack softens a harsh lesson and politely recommends people to mind their manners. He teaches through example, the best way, in my opinion, to help people rid themselves of bad habits. If you believe, as the poet obviously does, that teaching children early the difference between right and wrong is an effective way to save them some embarrassment and trouble later on, this poem can be a wonderful teaching tool.

The extention activitites for this book are endless but I also want to note that poetry is often short enough to read softly when you are waiting in line at school, for gym, music or lunch. When you are waiting in the car to pick up a sibling, when you are at the Dr.’s office, or in line at the grocery store. If you truly want to make a lasting impression on your child or students it is excellent practice to keep a collection of poetry such as this handy for those moments when you want to regain some focus. Read this poem aloud to your student. Then together read the poem and look for words within words (eg, dislike, sandwiched, forever). The goal is for students to identify words within words.

This is a great collection of Prelutsky's poems. Every poem in here is high interest to kids! Prelutsky is a master at catchy titles which make the reader want to read the poem. Poems like "I Wash My Shadow Weekly and The Snopp on the Sidewalk" make children laugh. Poems like "Sometimes" and "A Million Candles" speak to our feelings and sense of self. The poems are funny, enlightening, silly, thought-provoking, and above all engaging. The illustrations complete the poems, making this a must have collection.
Jack Prelutsky has a wonderful way of writing and using wordplay to make his poetry enjoyable to both parents and children. Meaning of poetry should be how it makes you feel, and his way of writing comments on life in deeper dimensions that are meaningful for children. The author does a wonderful job taking you to a different place with his playfulness and illustrations in this book. I would recommend this book to all ages, as an uplifting way to view life. This is my first time reading Jack Prelutsky, and I really enjoyed his work!
