Throughout his career, Vincent van Gogh made many works addressing the paradoxical task of representing night through colour and tonality. Van Gogh followed the Impressionist technique of "translating" visual light effects into various colour combinations, attempting to interweave the visual and metaphorical to produce fresh and original works of art. These artistic concerns are powerfully bound together in Van Gogh's nocturnal and twilight paintings and drawings.
