When Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, and Perfect - penguins whose ice-block building, napkin folding, feather combing, and ballroom dancing skills were beyond compare - take a nap one day, their oddball companion decides to go surfing. And so begins an unexpected voyage to a tropical land, where penguin meets pachyderm, and where (as usual) Tacky's gift for making a mess comes in handy...

Following upon Tacky the Penguin and Three Cheers for Tacky, this third adventure featuring the lovable bird with a mind - and a personality - all his own, continues to emphasize the virtue of non-conformity. But although Lester's narrative is entertaining enough, and Lynn Munsinger's watercolor illustrations continue to charm, somehow I wasn't quite as show more taken with Tacky in Trouble, as I had been with the previous two. It felt a little repetitive, as if Lester were telling the same story over again. Still, I'm going to hope that this is a weak installment, as I plan to continue reading in the series. We shall see... show less
I really like this one.

Tacky, being different from the other penguins, decides to go surfing while they nap. And he ends up in Africa, where he's promptly picked up as an elephant who thinks he's a bouquet! Naturally, his odd behavior saves the day and he ends up home.

What I love about this book is that the other penguins are clearly shown missing him while he's gone, not because he's useful to him (as so often is the storyline), but because he's Tacky.

For the first time in my Tacky reading experience, Tacky finds himself in way over his head and just by trying to prove to an elephant that he is a penguin, he manages to solve his problem penguin-style. It was funny and departure from the previous adventures. Still good though.
This is another book following Tacky's adventures. Tacky finds himself learning how to surf by filling up his shirt like a sail! However, he finds himself way out at sea and eventually ends up on an unknown island that is unlike anything he's ever seen before! He sits next to a "hairy" rock that ends up actually being an elephant! The elephant, not knowing what Tacky is, carries him with him to be flowers for his table (since Tacky is wearing a flowered shirt). Uh oh. Tacky is in trouble! What will he do? How will he get back to his island with his family and friends? Will he be able to get away from the elephant? Find out what happens to Tacky in this adventurous, fiction picture book!
This is the book that made my son and I fall in love with Tacky. He's an odd bird, but a nice bird to have around. Tacky sets sail on an iceburg and ends up on an island where he mistakes an elephant for a rock. The elephant mistakes Tacky for a bunch of flowers. Hilarity ensues.
The moral of this story is even if someone doesn't seem like they fit in with you, try and get to know then because they might be fun to have around. I like the idea that to one person something could be garbage but to another it is gold. Tacky thought he ruined the tablecloth but Rocky loved what he had done to it. I also like the ending when the other penguins are waiting for him to come home.
28 months - we own one tacky book that O really likes so I grabbed this one when I saw it at the thrift store for $1. A good story but it seemed a bit wordy and long, certainly a story I'll be bored of after a few reads but O enjoys it.
