Snowstruck: In the Grip of Avalanches
by Jill Fredston

Description
Every year around the globe, people cross paths with avalanches-some massive, some no deeper than a pizza box-often with deadly results. Avalanche expert Jill Fredston stalks these so-called freaks of nature, forecasting where and when they will strike, deliberately triggering them with explosives, teaching potential victims how to stay alive, and leading rescue efforts when tragedy strikes. Having spent decades trying to keep avalanches and people apart, Fredston brings them together show more unforgettably in Snowstruck. From a rare store of personal experience, she conveys a panorama of perspectives: a skier making what may prove his final decision, a victim buried so tightly that he can't move a finger, rescuers racing both time and weather, forecasters treading the line between reasonable risk and danger. Seamlessly interweaving these accounts, Fredston brings to life the awesome forces of nature that can turn the mountains deadly-and the equally inexorable forces of human nature that lure us time and again into treacherous terrain. show lessTags

This is not a book I would have ever picked up on my own. Hallelujah that my book group picked it! I found the book riveting and have not looked at the moutnains outside my window in the same way since. At times its like driving past a horrible car wreck, you don't want to know, you don't want to look, but you just can't help yourself. My mind boggles at the power of snow.
Nicely written, with the science mixed in among interesting stories of rescues and recoveries. A great starter book, but still interesting to those with a greater depth of knowledge on the subject.
If you are interested in avalanches, you want to read this book. This is a book about what happens when you don't read Jill Fredston's other book, Snow Sense. Fredston and her husband, Doug Fesler, ARE the avalanche experts. This book is a riveting as the previous book I read by Fredston, Rowing to Latitude. Exciting, tragic, and a good lesson in what happens if you get too full of yourself. I think I'll give to one of the boys for a Christmas present.
fascinating look at avalanches. well told and very interesting.
